How to Offer Funeral Prayer (Salat al-Janazah): A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

The funeral prayer, known as Salat al-Janazah, is a unique and profound act of worship in Islam. Unlike the five daily prayers, it contains no Ruku (bowing) or Sujood (prostration). Instead, it is a collective supplication—a final Dua offered to Allah on behalf of the deceased. Understanding how to offer funeral prayer is a Fard Kifayah (communal obligation) upon the Muslim community . At Quran Home School, we believe that mastering this sacred ritual is essential for every Muslim, as it brings comfort to the living and benefit to the departed.

What is Salat al-Janazah?

Salat al-Janazah is a prayer performed in congregation for a deceased Muslim. It is a Fard Kifayah, meaning that if some members of the community perform it, the obligation is lifted from the rest; however, if no one performs it, the entire community bears the sin . The prayer consists of four Takbeers (saying “Allahu Akbar”), with specific supplications between each one. It is a beautiful way to honor the deceased and seek Allah’s forgiveness on their behalf.

Step-by-Step Guide to Performing Funeral Prayer

Here is the sunnah method of offering Salat al-Janazah, as outlined by classical Islamic scholars .

1. Niyyah (Intention) and Standing

  • Intention: Stand facing the Qibla with the deceased placed in front of the congregation. Make the intention in your heart to perform the funeral prayer for the sake of Allah, seeking forgiveness for the deceased .
  • Position: The Imam stands at the head of a deceased male and at the middle (waist) of a deceased female . The congregation forms rows behind the Imam, with women forming rows behind the men .
  • First Takbeer: Raise your hands to your ears (or shoulders according to some schools) and say “Allahu Akbar.” Then fold your hands over your chest or below the navel, depending on your school of thought .

2. After the First Takbeer: Recite Surah Al-Fatihah

  • Recite Sana (Subhanaka Allahumma…) silently, followed by Ta’awwudh and Bismillah .
  • Then recite Surah Al-Fatihah. According to most scholars, it is obligatory to recite Al-Fatihah in the funeral prayer . Recite it silently.

3. After the Second Takbeer: Recite Durood Ibrahim

  • Say “Allahu Akbar” again without raising your hands .
  • Recite Durood Ibrahim (the same salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ recited in regular prayers): “Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala aali Muhammad…” .

4. After the Third Takbeer: Make Dua for the Deceased

  • Say “Allahu Akbar” again.
  • Recite the funeral Dua for the deceased. The most comprehensive and recommended Dua is:

Translation: “O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whomsoever You keep alive among us, keep him alive upon Islam, and whomsoever You cause to die among us, cause him to die upon Iman (faith)” .

If you do not know this Dua, you may recite any Dua for the deceased, such as “Allahumma ghfir lahu warhamhu” (O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him) .

5. After the Fourth Takbeer: Salaam

  • Say “Allahu Akbar” for the fourth time.
  • Briefly pause, then turn your face to the right and say “Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah.” Then turn to the left and repeat .
  • This completes the Salat al-Janazah.

Important Rulings and Conditions for Funeral Prayer

  • Prerequisites: Like all prayers, you must be in a state of Wudu (ablution), have your Awrah covered, and face the Qibla .
